  • Highly sustainable option, see product description!
  • Saku and poke cubes can be frozen for up to 6 months!

Our Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block is cut from the lean loin section (akami) of wild-caught bluefin tuna and trimmed into a traditional saku block for sushi and sashimi preparation.

Akami is the most classic and widely used bluefin cut in sushi bars, valued for its deep ruby color, clean ocean flavor, and firm texture. Unlike fattier bluefin cuts, akami delivers a pure, focused tuna experience that highlights freshness and technique rather than richness.

This saku block gives you complete control over slice thickness and presentation—ideal for sashimi, nigiri, or crudo. It’s a refined, everyday sushi cut that performs consistently and cleanly.

Akami vs Otoro: What’s the Difference?

Bluefin tuna offers several distinct cuts, each with its own character:

Akami (This Product)

  • Cut from the lean loin
  • Deep red color (retained by tasteless smoke process)
  • Clean, mild tuna flavor
  • Firm texture

Ideal for sushi, sashimi, and everyday raw preparations

Otoro (Our Premium Cut)

  • Cut from the fattest belly section
  • Pale pink with heavy marbling
  • Ultra-rich, buttery mouthfeel
  • Considered a luxury, indulgent experience

If you’re looking for purity and balance, akami is the traditional choice.
If you’re seeking maximum richness and indulgence, our Bluefin Otoro is the upgrade.

Both cuts serve different roles—and neither replaces the other.

Why Choose Bluefin Akami?

Akami is preferred when you want:

  • Clean, focused tuna flavor
  • Precise slicing and presentation
  • Less fat, more structure
  • A traditional sushi experience

It’s the backbone of classic sushi menus worldwide.

How to Enjoy

  • Slice against the grain for sashimi
  • Perfect for nigiri and hand rolls
  • Serve chilled with minimal seasoning
  • Best enjoyed raw to appreciate texture and color

My original order placed with Nordic Catch was scheduled to arrive within a 2 day window, UPS dropped the ball with a sortation error as they called it - I reached out to N. C. and they in turn contacted UPS and requested a Saturday delivery - UPS do not deliver - 2 days later my shipment arrived - that's a 4 day delivery with perishable products thawed. I contacted N. C. and they took care of the rest (a representative from Nordic Catch was always in contact - 24/7) - filed a claim with UPS and sent out a replacement order immediately! Nordic Catch has customer service second to NONE! When you shop here, you have no "worries!" The tuna was excellent! The salmon was equally as good! In the past I have tried other companies to find fish for sushi/sashimi without the best of luck - now I have a "go to" source for the best! Thanks, Nordic Catch!

Customer photo review of Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

So good!! We ordered for Easter dinner and it was the perfect choice. My personal fave was the tuna which we did 2 ways. Sashimi and Crust Seared!! My friends LOVED the fatty salmon sashimi style….and they always complain about salmon never being good. Our knife cuts were atrocious to say the least 😆 but it didn’t take away from the flavor and freshness. We’re already planning our next order.

I have purchased Tuna from a few other places and always wind up throwing half of each fillet away because it is usually too fishy to eat. These fillets are trimmed and there is no waste and no fishy smell or flavor ay all. It is the best Tuna that I have found anywhere. Will be buying again.

Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

The Bluefin Tuna Saku Block was wonderful! We used it for both sashimi and poke, and it was outstanding in every preparation. Fresh, clean, and rich without being overpowering. It held its shape perfectly when cut and had that smooth, melt-in-your-mouth finish you expect from high-grade bluefin. Great customer service! Will be purchasing again!

Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

Exceptional quality Bluefin Tuna Saku Block. The texture was pristine! Smooth, dense, and perfectly structured for clean, precise slicing. The deep ruby color was stunning and exactly what you want to see in premium bluefin. The flavor was rich yet incredibly clean, with that signature buttery finish that lingers just enough. It performed beautifully for nigiri and sashimi, and even held up wonderfully in a quick sear. If you’re looking for true sushi-grade tuna that rivals high-end omakase, this is it. Consistently impressive and absolutely worth it.

Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

I was excited to try the bluefin, but it had a strange texture that was unpalatable for me. I ate a couple pieces and don’t think I’ll have more. My partner didn’t mind it, so he’ll have the rest over time.

Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

We were very displeased with the tuna. The first time we bought it, the taste was exceptional. However, after this order, I don't think we will ever order it again as it had a distinct metallic taste and it was definitely not sushi grade.

Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

I was really disappointed with the bluefin tuna I received. The fish had a strong smell right out of the package, which suggests it was not fresh when shipped. I don’t believe this was a packaging issue—it seems like the product itself was already bad.

Wild Bluefin Tuna Akami Saku Block - Sushi-Grade Lean Bluefin

The standouts of my order was the salmon roe and both of the tunas. The crab looked great but I ordered that for my daughter so I did not actually eat any of it; but my daughters enjoyed it and it looked very fresh. My only disappointment was the salmon. I am not sure if it was because of the one I chose, but it had quite a few bones and had too much sinew, making it difficult to eat.
