FAQ - A5 Japanese Wagyu

What is A5 Japanese Wagyu?

A5 is the highest grade awarded to Wagyu beef in Japan. It represents the highest levels of marbling, color, texture, and overall quality, making it one of the most premium beef products in the world.

Is this real Japanese Wagyu or American Wagyu?

This is authentic Japanese A5 Wagyu, raised and graded in Japan under strict regulations. It is not American Wagyu or crossbred beef.

Why is A5 Wagyu so expensive?

A5 Wagyu is rare due to strict grading standards, limited supply, and the intensive care required to raise Wagyu cattle in Japan. Only a small percentage of beef qualifies for A5 grading.

How is A5 Wagyu different from regular steak?

A5 Wagyu contains significantly more marbling than traditional beef, resulting in a buttery texture, richer flavor, and a melt-in-your-mouth experience that is very different from conventional steaks.

How should A5 Wagyu be cooked?

A5 Wagyu is best cooked quickly over high heat.

Most chefs recommend:

  • lightly seasoning with salt
  • searing briefly (30–60 seconds per side)
  • serving in smaller slices

Overcooking can reduce the signature texture.

How much A5 Wagyu should I serve per person?

Because of its richness, A5 Wagyu is typically enjoyed in smaller portions:

  • 2–4 oz per person is usually sufficient

It is often served as part of a tasting experience rather than a large steak.

Do I need to season A5 Wagyu heavily?

No. A5 Wagyu is best with minimal seasoning—usually just salt—to highlight its natural flavor and fat quality.

Is A5 Wagyu better than American Wagyu?

They offer different experiences.

  • A5 Japanese Wagyu: extremely rich, delicate, melt-in-your-mouth
  • American Wagyu: more similar to traditional steak, with higher marbling

A5 Wagyu is generally considered the most luxurious option.

Is A5 Wagyu worth it?

For those looking for a premium dining experience, A5 Wagyu offers a level of texture and flavor that is difficult to replicate with any other type of beef.

Customer photo review of A5 Japanese Wagyu Ribeye Steak, Vacuum Pack (16oz)

This hands down the BEST steak I have ever had. The A5 Wagyu had incredible marbling and practically melted in my mouth. I gave it a quick cast-iron sear with just a little salt, and the flavor was unbelievably rich, buttery, and clean.

A5 Japanese Wagyu Ribeye Steak, Vacuum Pack (16oz)

Amazing product and well worth the cost. Steaks came out like butter. Treat yourself to this! Delivery was on time and well insulated. The steaks came with the info on the cow, which was a nice touch to present at dinner.

A5 Japanese Wagyu Filet Mignon Steak, Vacuum Pack (8oz)

Once again, I am very impressed with the quality I have been receiving… The taste and the tenderness is like no other steak I’ve ever had… thinking about trying Wago do not even hesitate… Complete satisfaction

A5 Japanese Wagyu New York Strip, Vacuum Pack (14oz)

This A5 Wagyu filet is unlike any other steak imaginable. I’m pretty picky with steak and generally only eat filet because it’s very lean and void of grizzle and heavy fat that doesn’t render. This steak however has such incredible marbling that renders perfectly making every bite 10x as good as the best bite of a ribeye while still keeping all the “clean plate” qualities of filet mignon. The 8oz portions are perfect for two since this is such a rich piece of meat. If you’ve never experienced this it is very much worth trying. Nordic Catch is wonderful and provides excellent service and support as well. 10/10 highly recommend!

A5 Japanese Wagyu Filet Mignon - 2 pack bundle (1LB total)

Just like M&M’s, melts in your mouth! Cannot imagine ever buying another steak from any grocery store again… every bite is like butter !

A5 Japanese Wagyu Ribeye Steak (Bulk Case)

I eat Japanese Wagyu a lot, as I used to live in Japan and my wife is Japanese. I have never seen the date code on the meat be 3+ years old. While the meat looks good, the date code on the authenticity package shows it's from 2022!! Can you please explain why you'd be selling 3.5 year old meat? Thanks, Jared W.

A5 Japanese Wagyu Filet Mignon Steak, Vacuum Pack (8oz)

Received right on schedule! Celebrating our 10th anniversary on 7/30, and ordered these to have a special in-home feast. Wagyu ribeye's & grilled asparagus w/ lemon and garlic. Thanks for having these available for purchase! -Joseph

A5 Japanese Wagyu Filet Mignon (Bulk Case)

A5 Wagyu. I have eaten all over including Japan. This was virtually inedible. Fat content was way high almost no red meat. When I opened the package it looked totally white with maybe 5% red. The picture I ordered from looked like normal Wagyu but not even close to what I was shipped. I would never order again. I cant believe you haven't had numerous complaints. Rick Glass

A5 Japanese Wagyu New York Strip (14oz portion)

The steaks are absolutely lovely. I do, however, think that you should go to greater lengths to ensure that items sold explicitly as frozen arrive in better shape. Nothing I order ever arrives frozen, and if only one more day’s delay occurred with several of them the freshness might have been seriously compromised. But otherwise lovely lovely items.

Great surprise gift for my husband. Been on his 'bucket list' of meats to try. Thoroughly enjoyed it from the certification, preparation, and of course..consummation!
